Southend AC Shine at the SEAA U20/Senior Champs

The region’s finest talent gathered for the South of England AA U20/Senior Outdoor Championships, and Southend AC’s athletes made sure the club’s name resonated loud and clear across the track.

The highlight of the weekend came from Matthew Agbolegbe in the U20 Men’s 400m, still 17 and competing a level above his age-group.

Matthew put on an absolute masterclass in pace judgment and determination. Coming off the final bend, he dug deep to execute a phenomenal finish, crossing the line to claim the South of England U20 Championship Gold medal. It was a performance that showcased not just his raw speed, but his tactical maturity on the big stage.

In the Senior Women’s 100m, Vicky showed exactly why she is one of the club’s most consistent sprinters.

Vicky capitalized on the elements to clock a blazing, wind-assisted Season’s Best. While the wind gauge might keep it out of the official record books for rankings, the sheer speed and displayed prove she is in peak condition for the rest of the season.

Inspired by the team’s success? Whether you’re looking to compete at regional level or just want to improve your running, City of Southend AC welcomes all abilities. Check out our training times or come down to the track this Tuesday or Thursday.

Glory and Blistering Heat at Eastern Champs

If you were out at the track this past weekend for the Eastern Outdoor Track & Field Championships, you don’t need us to tell you how brutal the conditions were. It wasn’t just hot. The extreme conditions unfortunately took a heavy toll across the field, with many athletes across various clubs suffering from heat stroke and exhaustion. But true to the spirit of City of Southend-on-Sea AC, our red-white-and-black vests didn’t just endure—they fought for the podium.

Quick mentions for Jerome (U18 Boys) who picked up a gold in 200 and silver in 100m and George in the 100m U16 Boys.

Beyond the podium finishes, every single Southend AC athlete who stepped onto the track deserves massive credit. Managing warm-ups, hydration, and pacing in that kind of climate requires serious discipline. You all represented the club with pride.

It was a weekend to remember at the Chelmsford Sport and Athletics Centre as the red, white, and black of Southend Athletic Club competed against the best in the county at the Essex County Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

We were incredibly proud to see 28 athletes representing the club across a massive variety of disciplines.

The real story of the weekend, however, was the staggering rate of improvement. Out of our 28 competitors, an incredible 26 Personal Bests (PBs) were recorded.

While the PBs tell the story of development, here are just a few of the standout podium finishes from the weekend:

    • Billy: A phenomenal weekend in the field! Billy secured Gold in the Shot Put, Silver in the Hammer, and completed his set with a Bronze in the Discus.
    • Alba: Showed incredible consistency in the throwing circle, claiming Silver in the Hammer and a hard-earned Bronze in the Discus.
    • George Hill: One of our most exciting young sprinters, George blazed down the track to secure double Silver in both the U16 Boys 100m and 200m.
    • Ade: Representing the veterans with distinction, Ade claimed Silver in the Vet final.
    • Matthew Agbolegbe: In a lightning-fast U18 Boys 100m final, Matthew kept his composure to take home the Silver medal.
    • Freya: Freya threw beautifully to secure Bronze in the Girls U18 Hammer.

The Men’s Masters squad kicked off the EMAC (Eastern Masters Athletics Club) season with a performance defined by pure heart and club spirit!

Despite missing several key athletes due to late injuries, the team refused to let the momentum slide. In a true display of “every point counts,” members stepped up into unfamiliar events just to secure those vital single points—and it paid off.

Against all odds, the squad finished the match in 1st place with a narrow but vital 11.5 points lead , securing a fantastic start to the season.

PBs smashed at Southend Outdoor Season Opener

What a spectacular day at Garon Park! On April 12th, the sun was shining, the track was fast, and the energy was absolutely electric as athletes from across the region gathered for the Southend Track & Field Meet.

The atmosphere throughout the day was a testament to the passion of our community. From the first whistle at the Quadrathlon to the final heat of the afternoon, the dedication shown by every athlete was truly inspiring. Most notably, we recorded over 100 personal bests throughout the meet! Watching so many of you push your limits and cross the finish line with new milestones is exactly why we host these events.

To our officials, volunteers, and the clubhouse staff: thank you. The smooth running of an event of this size is only possible because of your commitment. To the parents, coaches, and spectators who cheered from the stands—you provided the noise and support that pushed our athletes to achieve those 100+ personal bests.
