The outcome of a series of meetings by a few enthusiasts at George Hogsflesh’s house in Westcliff to discuss forming an athletics club in 1905 is the present day City of Southend Athletics club.

Its first headquarters was the Blue Boar Prittlewell with the licensee, Mr Oliver Trigg as vice president with founding members G.H Hogsflesh, T. N. Dainty, A Whybrow, P.D. Platt, E.S. Chalk, E.B. Nethercot and A. Bonbernard.

The club, originally known as The Southend Harriers, set out on their first cross country run on the 7th of October 1905. It later became Southend-on-sea Athletic club in 1937 after the amalgamation of the original Southend and County Harriers (founded 1905)  and the Leigh-on-sea Harriers (founded 1912).
